This was a quick read, which held my interest and included some nice connections to the Darcy heritage. The mystery was interesting and the scenes with the Darcys captured the essence of what we would imagine their relationship to be; two passionate people not afraid to "express opinions that are their own..."Product details

Before I tell you why you should read this book let me just say that if you enjoy historical suspense stories of any era you'll want to read Cowardly Witness. it is well written, perfectly paced, and populated by interesting characters above and beyond the regular Pride and Prejudice characters we love.
Ayr Bray set this book a few months after Elizabeth and Darcy marry. They are just settling into a rhythm at Pemberley when an inquisitor requests that they house the only witness in a case of murder and corruption. Attempts have been made on his life and he is greatly in need of protection. Mr. Darcy agrees to take him in, but Elizabeth has her reservations, which causes her quite a bit of stress.
It sems all is well and everyone begins to relax when the presence of the whiteness is revealed and chaos ensues. Without giving away all the juicy details, there is a kidnapping, a shoot out, and a saber battle.
I thought I loved Ayr Bray's romance novels, but they are nothing to the compelling suspense story told here.
This book reads like it was written by a high school student. I did not find the depth in either plot or character that I have found in so many other JAFF books. Do not bother with this one.
Not worth the price
The writing was good, and the story is suspenseful. I gave it a 3 for several reasons.
1. I thought the author made Elizabeth excessively fearful at the beginning of the story, and her fears seemed to be for herself. Austen's Lizzy would have been more concerned for her husband and the others living at Pemberley.
2. Lizzy calls Georgiana her "sister-in-law"; during the Regency period, she would have been referred to as her sister.
3. Lizzy tells the servants to cut up material for bandages and sterilize them. Techniques for sterilization during medical procedures were not developed until 1867 (this story takes place in 1813).
4. Why doesn't Darcy give Poe a false name before introducing him to the servants? He seems to feel that the servants' loyalty to him will prevent any leaks from getting out, but when you have dozens of servants working on an estate, that seems a tad unrealistic.
5. During the "shoot-out", Starnes, one of Darcy's men, shoots and hits 2 men with the 2 bullets in his pistol while riding horseback. Firearms at the time, particularly pistols, were notoriously inaccurate; the chances of a coachman shooting 2 men with a pistol from horseback are ludicrously small.
Maybe I'm being too picky, but I feel strongly that, if you're going to write historical fiction, PARTICULARLY using the P&P characters, you should do your homework. Because there are fanatical purists like myself who will be scrutinizing every word. )
Lovely to revisit Pemberly with Elizabeth and Darcy. However, all of a sudden I would be assaulted by a 4 letter word and even a crude word for a body part. Not necessary.
Lots of action but Darcy and Elizabeth are steadfast and true to character while remaining the besotted couple all who know them love and respect.
A very brave and honorable Darcy fills this book and I Love him! This is a short, but sweet variation about my favorite couple caught up in intrigue and bravery.
